Arda Industries raises $232M to automate US manufacturing with AI
Former OpenAI research chief Bob McGrew’s startup secures funding to turn design files into assembly lines.

Key points
- Arda Industries announced $232 million in total funding, including a $160 million Series A.
- The company achieved a $1.5 billion valuation with backing from Altimeter, Accel and Khosla Ventures.
- Defense contractor Anduril serves as the first customer, reporting significant reductions in engineering time.
Arda Industries emerged from stealth on Tuesday with $232 million in funding, according to a report by The Next Web. The startup, founded by former OpenAI research chief Bob McGrew, announced the capital raise alongside its public launch. The total amount includes a $160 million Series A round that values the company at $1.5 billion.
The Series A was co-led by Altimeter, Accel and Khosla Ventures. Other participating investors included XYZ Venture Capital, 8VC, SV Angel and Felicis. This latest investment follows a $72 million seed round that was led by Accel and Founders Fund earlier in the company’s development.
Platform capabilities and early results
Arda’s software platform converts product designs into functional assembly lines for manufacturers. McGrew described the tool to CNBC as a user interface and agent for manufacturing engineers, comparing its utility to how Claude or Cursor assists programmers. The system processes CAD files and design documents to determine assembly orders, write instructions and layout stations.
Anduril, a defense technology firm valued at $90 billion this month, acted as Arda’s design partner and first customer. Anduril integrates Arda’s technology into its ArsenalOS manufacturing software. According to Anduril co-founder and chief operating officer Matt Grimm, the company would miss production goals without this tool.
Anduril reported that basic work instructions that previously required 10 hours now take 15 minutes. More complex engineering tasks that once took up to 30 hours are now completed in about 2.5 hours. This speed allows design changes to reach the factory floor without halting ongoing production.
Market context and future plans
Arda aims to accelerate American manufacturing by reducing the time and cost of setting up production lines. The company notes that programming conventional automation for a single station can take three to six months and cost nearly $1 million. In contrast, new smartphones often remain at full production for only about four months.
Arda stated that no one has successfully built a smartphone in America, citing the Trump Mobile T1 as an example of a device marketed as American-made that was actually produced in Taiwan. The company plans to start with defense and data center supply chain manufacturers, such as makers of transformers and electrical equipment.
Consumer electronics and robotics are identified as subsequent target sectors. Arda intends to build automated lines that can be reconfigured as quickly as human workers. This approach aims to enable the production of goods that currently rely on large workforces in Asia.
What should you do?
Manufacturing executives should evaluate how AI-driven design tools could reduce engineering bottlenecks in their operations. Supply chain managers ought to monitor developments in domestic automation capabilities for potential partnerships. Investors in industrial technology may want to track how these valuation trends affect other hardware startups.
What to do and how to stay safe: Arda Industries
- Review current assembly line setup times to identify bottlenecks that AI planning tools could address.
- Assess whether your organization’s CAD workflows can integrate with external agent-based planning systems.
- Monitor vendor announcements regarding reconfigurable automation for short-lifecycle product lines.
- Evaluate the total cost of ownership for conventional automation versus new AI-assisted methods.
