Key points
- Surface Laptop Ultra is available for order with shipments starting October 16.

Microsoft has begun accepting orders for the Surface Laptop Ultra, a device targeted at developers and power users, with shipments scheduled to commence on October 16. The company also announced a financial incentive program for prospective buyers who currently own Apple MacBook Pro computers, aiming to drive hardware migration.
According to Windows Central, Microsoft is providing up to $1,000 in cash back to MacBook Pro owners who purchase the new Surface Laptop Ultra. This cash rebate is separate from and additional to any trade-in value the customer might receive for their existing Apple device. The pricing and availability details were confirmed on October 7.
Event Context and Features
The hardware announcement was part of a broader Windows and Surface event that Windows Central described as struggling to balance developer-focused content with consumer-facing news. The first twenty minutes of the presentation resembled a Build conference session, featuring technical discussions on Llama.cpp and Microsoft Execution Containers that likely alienated general audiences.
Following the technical segments, Microsoft shifted focus to consumer features, unveiling a redesigned Windows Search experience for Windows 11. This new interface is currently being rolled out to Windows Insiders and promises faster performance along with early support for inline actions. Microsoft states that the updated search function is more efficient and functional than the previous version.
Market Reaction and Hardware
Preorders for RTX Spark laptops have also gone live across several brands, marking a significant release day for enthusiasts waiting for this hardware. While the Surface Laptop Ultra is priced for professional users, it has generated interest among the broader enthusiast community. The event’s mixed approach left some viewers confused, as the transition from dense AI jargon to useful consumer features was abrupt.
A new Windows 11 wallpaper appeared on RTX Spark laptops, but Microsoft has not officially released the image file. Consequently, fans have resorted to using AI tools to recreate the wallpaper themselves. This lack of official asset distribution contrasts with the detailed feature explanations provided for the Search experience and the Surface hardware.
What should you do?
Users interested in the Surface Laptop Ultra should verify current trade-in values and cash-back terms directly with Microsoft or authorized retailers before purchasing. Windows Insiders can update their devices to test the new Search experience and provide feedback on performance improvements. Those waiting for RTX Spark laptops should monitor preorder status pages from their preferred manufacturers, as availability may vary by region and brand.
What to do and how to stay safe: Microsoft
- Check official Microsoft retailer pages for current Surface Laptop Ultra pricing and specific cash-back eligibility requirements for MacBook Pro trade-ins.
- Update Windows Insider builds to evaluate the new Search experience and report any performance issues or bugs through the Feedback Hub.
- Monitor preorder availability for RTX Spark laptops from major manufacturers, as stock levels may fluctuate during the initial launch window.
- Search for community-created assets if the official Windows 11 wallpaper for RTX Spark laptops is not yet available for direct download.
