CMF Launches First Portable Bluetooth Speakers With Customizable 3D-Printed Panels

CMF, the budget-focused brand created by Nothing, has launched its first portable Bluetooth speakers. The new CMF Speaker Series arrives in two sizes, offering affordability alongside unique designs that allow users to customize hardware components through 3D printing. This release marks the brand’s entry into the wireless audio market as it transitions into a standalone India-based subsidiary.

The CMF Speaker S costs $59 and features a single 45mm full-range driver with two passive radiators. The larger CMF Speaker M is priced at $109 and includes a 10W tweeter and a 25W woofer for improved bass and instrument separation. Both models are available in white, dark gray, orange, and turquoise, providing distinct aesthetic options for consumers seeking budget-friendly audio devices with modern styling.

Design and Customization Options

Both speakers feature a multifunction knob and a front panel that can be removed and swapped. CMF plans to release official design files, enabling users to 3D print custom colors or entirely new designs for these components. The vertical flap on top, which serves as a hanging mechanism, is also part of the customizable front assembly, allowing for extensive personalization of the device’s appearance.

According to The Verge, the design resembles electronic milk cartons, though the company does not explicitly cite dairy packaging as inspiration. This modular approach extends the brand’s strategy of combining affordability with unique, bright color options and distinctive hardware forms, similar to its previously launched Headphone Pro product line.

Connectivity and Performance Features

The speakers provide up to 18 hours of battery life and carry an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Audio profiles can be customized via the Nothing X app. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 6, NFC fast pairing, Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair, and audio transmission over a USB-C cable. Users can connect to two wireless audio sources simultaneously for quick switching between devices.

Stereo mode is supported by pairing two Speaker S or two Speaker M units, though mixing models is not allowed. An Auracast-based party mode allows synchronization with multiple speakers, including those from other manufacturers. This feature enables users to create a multi-speaker audio environment without being limited to a single brand ecosystem.

What should you do?

Security professionals should monitor for vulnerabilities in the Nothing X app, which controls sound profiles and potentially device settings. Users should verify that firmware updates are available and secure before connecting the devices to corporate networks. Reviewing Bluetooth pairing protocols is advisable to ensure unauthorized devices cannot intercept audio streams or gain access to connected mobile devices.

What to do and how to stay safe: CMF

• Check for available firmware updates for the speakers and the Nothing X app before initial use.
• Review Bluetooth pairing settings to ensure devices only connect to trusted sources.
• Monitor the Nothing X app for any reported security vulnerabilities or data privacy concerns.
• Verify that the IP68 rating is intact before exposing devices to water or dust environments.
