Microsoft Tests Restart-Free Edge Updates While Idle Feature Remains Prototype

Microsoft demonstrates a prototype for Edge security updates that avoids browser restarts, while current tools still require idle-time restarts for users and admins.

Key points

  • Microsoft’s restart-free update technology is an early prototype with no production release date.
  • Users can currently enable "Restart to update on idle" to defer browser restarts until the device is inactive.
  • Administrators can use Edge management service to monitor versions and receive security update alerts for Windows devices.

Microsoft has demonstrated a prototype version of Microsoft Edge that installs security updates without requiring the browser to restart. The technology allows users to keep tabs and active work open while the browser moves to a patched version in the background, according to a report by TechRepublic.

The capability remains an early prototype and is not available in the current production release of Edge or Chromium. Microsoft stated on October 15 that there is no set date for a general release. Current update mechanisms still rely on automatic restarts or waiting for the device to be idle before applying changes.

Current Update Mechanisms

Until the prototype becomes available, users and IT teams can utilize the "Restart to update on idle" feature. This option is disabled by default but can be enabled in Settings under About Microsoft Edge. The browser waits until the computer is not being used before warning the user that a restart is imminent.

Once the device is idle, Edge applies the pending update and restarts the browser. The system then attempts to restore open tabs. Microsoft warns that this process does not guarantee the survival of every unfinished task. Unsaved forms or work in web applications that do not save automatically may still be lost during the restart.

Administrative Monitoring Tools

Organizations can configure the idle update feature through the Edge management service. This service also includes Security Update Alerts, which notify administrators when a new Edge version contains fixes at or above a chosen severity threshold. The Monitoring dashboard displays the Edge versions running across managed devices and the CVEs addressed by specific updates.

The dashboard indicates which devices may still require updates, showing the severity of the vulnerabilities fixed. Microsoft currently limits this monitoring data to Windows devices. Administrators must enable version monitoring before these device insights appear in the dashboard. This requires diagnostic data from managed Edge installations, so administrators should account for this requirement when configuring organizational telemetry policies.

What to do and how to stay safe

  • Hardware-backed key storage prevents attackers from extracting credentials even if they gain physical access to the device.
  • Mobile device management enforces consistent security policies across diverse operating systems and hardware configurations.
  • Application sandboxing limits the damage a compromised app can cause by restricting its access to other data and system resources.

Mobile device security requires a layered approach combining hardware, software, and policy controls. Enable encryption, use strong passcodes, and keep your operating system updated to protect your data.
