Google expands its health ecosystem with new premium bands, automated workout detection, and safety tools for Fitbit users this month.
Key points
- Health Guardian features launch for Fitbit Air and Edge with Google Health Premium subscriptions.
- Automatic activity detection expands to over 100 workouts with improved accuracy for Fitbit and Pixel devices.
- New Fitbit Air Metal Mesh bands are available for pre-order at Target and the Google Store.
Google announced the rollout of new health and safety tools for its Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge trackers later this month. The update introduces Health Guardian features to users with a Google Health Premium subscription, adding long-term health trend monitoring to the wearable lineup.
The company also revealed new premium accessories, including a stainless steel Metal Mesh band for the Fitbit Air. These updates coincide with significant improvements to automatic workout detection across Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, and Pixel Watch models 3, 4, and 5.
Expanded Health Monitoring and Accessories
Health Guardian is a suite of tools designed to track subtle health changes over time. According to Google, users can set up blood pressure trends and insulin resistance trends in the Google Health app. If users meet monthly wear requirements, they receive a monthly report to help make early lifestyle adjustments.
Google Health Premium subscribers can use the Health Coach to interpret these pattern shifts. The Coach provides personalized lifestyle guidance and fitness plan adaptations. Users also receive additional context to share with their doctors, enhancing the clinical utility of the wearable data.
To complement the trackers, Google introduced the Fitbit Air Metal Mesh band. Crafted from flexible stainless steel, the band aims to function as jewelry for day-to-night wear. It is available in Champagne Gold or Polished Silver for $69.99. A bundle with an Obsidian Fitbit Air costs $149.99 at Target and the Google Store.
Improved Activity Detection Accuracy
Google updated its automatic activity detection to be more intelligent and reliable based on user feedback. The system now detects more than 100 activities, up from 10, including strength training, swimming, and team sports. This expansion applies to Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, and Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5.
The new detection engine uses contextual reasoning to factor in workout routines, historical data, and location. Google claims this approach delivers nearly twice the accuracy of previous methods. It also cuts missed workouts by more than half, addressing a common user complaint.
Workouts meeting a 15-minute minimum duration with sustained elevated heart rates are logged automatically. A summary is sent to the mobile app within 30 minutes. The system learns from user confirmations or edits to refine future predictions, creating a personalized tracking experience that requires less manual input.
What should you do?
Users with Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, or Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 should check their device settings to ensure automatic activity detection is enabled. Google Health Premium subscribers should verify their subscription status to access Health Guardian features. Those interested in the new bands can pre-order them through Target or the Google Store.
What to do and how to stay safe: Google
- Verify that your Fitbit or Pixel Watch software is updated to the latest version to support new tracking features.
- Check your Google Health Premium subscription status to ensure access to Health Guardian blood pressure and insulin resistance trends.
- Review your automatic activity detection settings to confirm the 15-minute minimum duration threshold meets your workout habits.
- Monitor your monthly health reports for any anomalies that may require consultation with a healthcare provider.
