Campaign Context and Narrative Scope
The campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 takes place over a period of five chaotic days. Windows Central notes that while the broader lore has developed over several years, the specific events of this title are compressed into this short timeframe. The story serves as the finale for the subseries' rebooted plotline.
This narrative arc began with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2020. The reboot centered on Task Force 141, a unit composed of Captain John Price, Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley, Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, and Sergeant Johnny "Soap" MacTavish. Their global counter-terrorism efforts introduced key figures such as Farah Karim, founder of the Urzikstan Liberation Force.

The franchise has a long history, with the first Call of Duty title released by Infinity Ward 23 years ago. Windows Central states that this release is more than 25 games into the series. The title represents both a conclusion to the current rebooted storyline and a rebirth for the developer under its new management structure.
